St Constantine of Kiev

Blessed Constantine, Metropolitan of Kiev (1159)

Constantine was sent from Constantinople to Kiev at a time when the Russian princes were at odds and the Church with them. A metropolitan had been set up there without the Patriarch's blessing, and Constantine, coming to look into the matter, deposed that man and put out of office the priests he had ordained.

The life of St Constantine of Kiev

The people divided, some holding to the one and some to the other, until the Patriarch sent a third man and removed them both. Rather than prolong the quarrel Constantine gave up the see and went to Chernigov, where he fell gravely ill.

Before he died he wrote a testament, gave it sealed to Bishop Anthony, and made him swear to carry out what it said. He died in the year eleven hundred and fifty-nine. When the seal was broken it was found that he had asked not to be buried at all, but to be dragged out of the city and left for the dogs, because he held himself guilty of the division in the Church. The bishop had given his word, and it was done. The body lay in the open three days, and pillars of fire were seen standing over it at night. Then the prince ordered him carried in and buried with the honour of his rank, in the church where Igor lay.
