St Dorotheus of Tyre

Hieromartyr Dorotheus, Bishop of Tyre

Dorotheus governed the church at Tyre through most of a long life. Under Diocletian's persecution his own people urged him away for safety, and he went into Thrace until the danger passed and Constantine had given the Church peace, then came back and held that see again for more than fifty years, teaching and bringing many out of paganism.

The life of St Dorotheus of Tyre

He was a reader too, and left writings about the martyrs of earlier years, some of it set down from things he had witnessed himself while in Rome.

He was past a hundred years old when Julian the Apostate began turning against the Christians again, and once more he left Tyre for Thrace to escape it. This time the emperor's men found him. They tortured an old man's body without mercy, and it was there, at a hundred and seven, that he gave up his life to God rather than the persecutors' demand.
