ORTHROS

The Story of the Bible

The whole Bible is one story, and its center is Christ, the Old concealed in the New, the New revealed in the Old. Inside Orthros the story is walked in forty-five stations, across these eight epochs.

I

CREATION

In the Beginning, an Orthros gold engraving-line scene: light divided from darkness over the deep.
In the Beginning

In the beginning, God made heaven and earth, six days spoken into being, and the breath of life breathed into man. The story opens with light, and it will end with light.

II

PATRIARCHS

Jacob's Ladder, an Orthros gold engraving-line scene: a ladder rising through cloud into an arched heaven.
Jacob's Ladder

Abraham is called out of Ur with a promise; Jacob sees a ladder set up on the earth, its top reaching to heaven. The promise is carried, for now, in a single family.

III

EXODUS

The Red Sea, an Orthros gold engraving-line scene: the waters standing as walls beside the dry path.
The Red Sea

The sea parts, the Law is given at Sinai, bread falls from heaven. A people is led out of slavery, and every step of the road is a shadow of things to come.

IV

KINGDOM

David's harp, and David's throne, and to David, a promise: a Son whose kingdom will have no end. The psalms he sang are still the Church's prayer book.

V

PROPHETS & EXILE

The vineyard of the Lord is laid waste; the people are carried to a strange land. And there, in the dark, the prophets keep the promise burning, a Virgin shall conceive.

VI

THE INCARNATION

THE CENTER OF THE STORY

The Nativity, an Orthros gold engraving-line scene: the star's light descending upon the cave.
The Nativity

God became man. The story does not merely continue here; it turns. Every thread the Old Testament carried, the ladder, the bush, the ark, the throne, is gathered into one Person, born in a cave in Bethlehem.

VII

THE CHURCH

Pentecost, an Orthros gold engraving-line scene: tongues of fire descending in an arched heaven.
Pentecost

Fire descends at Pentecost, and the Gospel goes out to all nations, the age of the martyrs, the Fathers, and the councils. It is the age we are still living in.

VIII

THE END

The Second Coming, an Orthros gold engraving-line scene: the throne prepared beneath the opened heavens.
The Age to Come

The story that opened with light closes with a city that needs no sun. Behold, He makes all things new, and the age to come has already begun at every Liturgy.

“Beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself.”
