St Hypatius of Gangra

Hieromartyr Hypatius, Bishop of Gangra (326)

Hypatius held the see of Gangra in Asia Minor and sat among the fathers of the first Council, where he stood with Athanasius against the Arian teaching and was praised there for his holiness. Coming home from Constantinople the year after the Council, he was set upon in a lonely stretch of road by men who followed a schismatic teaching he had opposed.

The life of St Hypatius of Gangra

They ran him through and threw him down into the mud beside the way, and as they did he prayed for them the way Stephen had prayed for the men who stoned him. A woman among the attackers struck the blow that finished him, driving a stone into his head. His killers hid what they had done, but a man who kept straw in a cave nearby found the body, knew whose it was, and carried the news back to the city, and the people of Gangra came out and buried their bishop themselves. The woman who had struck him was afterward driven out of her mind, and it was only at his grave, brought there by others and prayed over, that she came back to herself and spent what remained of her life doing penance for it.
