St Myron of Cyzicus

Martyr Myron, Presbyter of Cyzicus

Myron served as a presbyter in Achaia, in Greece, known for his gentleness toward his people and his readiness to defend them. On the feast of the Nativity, while he was celebrating the Liturgy, the governor Antipater came into the church with soldiers to arrest the congregation, and Myron spoke out boldly against him for his cruelty, which brought the governor's wrath down on him instead.

The life of St Myron of Cyzicus

He was beaten and thrown into a blazing oven, and tradition holds that though the fire scorched many bystanders, Myron himself came through it unharmed.

When Antipater still demanded that he sacrifice to the gods and Myron refused, the governor ordered strips of skin cut from his body; Myron is said to have taken one of the strips and thrown it back in his tormentor's face. He was beaten further and thrown to wild beasts, who would not touch him, and Antipater, seeing himself defeated, is said to have taken his own life in shame. Myron was then taken to the city of Cyzicus, where he was finally beheaded, around the year 250, and his memory has been kept there ever since.
