The life of St Marcellus of Apamea

He gave himself to bringing the pagans of the region to Christ, and there was a great temple of Jupiter he wanted torn down. A workman who offered to help could not get the wood beneath its columns to catch fire, until Marcellus blessed water in the old way of the Church and had it sprinkled on the wood, and after that it burned as it should and the whole building came down. Some time later, watching soldiers pull apart another such temple nearby, he was seized by the pagans of the place, who blamed him for it, and thrown alive into the fire. When his killers were afterward found out, his own sons wanted to see them punished for it, but the bishops of the region would not allow it, saying that a death met in that way called for thanks to God rather than revenge, and so it was let go.
