St Euplus of Catania

Holy Martyr and Archdeacon Euplus of Catania

Euplus served as an archdeacon in the Sicilian city of Catania, always carrying a copy of the Gospel with him and preaching constantly to the pagans about Christ. He was arrested while reading and explaining the Gospel to a gathered crowd and brought before the governor Calvisianus, where he openly confessed himself a Christian and denounced the worship of idols.

The life of St Euplus of Catania

For this he was sentenced to torture and imprisoned for many days, sustained, tradition says, by a spring of water that flowed within his cell to quench his thirst.

Brought to trial again, he confessed his faith once more with the same courage as before. The governor ordered his ears torn off and his execution by the sword. As he was led out to be beheaded, they hung the Gospel book around his neck, and Euplus asked for time to pray; he used it instead to read and explain the Gospel once more to those gathered to watch him die, and many of the pagans present came to believe in Christ before the soldiers carried out his execution. He suffered in the year 304, and his memory is still kept with honor in Catania, where he is counted among the city's patron saints alongside Agatha.
