St Eleutherius of Illyria

Hieromartyr Eleutherius of Illyria

Eleutherius was raised in Rome by his mother, a Christian, who had lost her husband young and given her son into the care of the bishop of that city. The bishop saw something unusual in the boy and moved him through the ranks quickly, a deacon at fifteen, a priest at eighteen, and bishop of Illyria by the time he was twenty.

The life of St Eleutherius of Illyria

He went back to Rome, and there under Hadrian he was seized for preaching Christ openly and beheaded. An official sent to deal with him was so struck by what he saw that he too came to believe, and was put to death alongside him, though the sources that tell this Life do not agree on the man's name. His mother came to weep over her son's body and would not be turned away, and for that she too was put to death. Both are kept in the Church's memory on the same day, mother and son together.
