St Theophano the Empress

Holy Empress and Wonderworker Theophano (893)

Theophano was born in Constantinople to parents who had long prayed for a child, and from her earliest years she was raised in careful devotion and grew known for her piety. When she came of age, the emperor Basil the Macedonian chose her as a bride for his son Leo, and the two were married with the rejoicing of the whole city.

The life of St Theophano the Empress

Their happiness was cut short when Leo was falsely accused of plotting against his father's life, and both husband and wife were imprisoned together for three years before the truth was made known and they were freed.

After Basil's death Leo became emperor, remembered as Leo the Wise, but Theophano set little value on her new rank, giving herself instead to prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and the founding of churches and monasteries, and speaking, those who knew her said, no untrue or careless word. She died around the year 893. Her husband wished to build a church over her tomb, but was refused, and built instead a church dedicated to All Saints, trusting that if his wife were counted among them she would be honored whenever their feast was kept. A later tradition ties this act to the Church's keeping of the Sunday after Pentecost as the feast of All Saints, though that feast was already kept long before her lifetime.
