The life of Varus and Companions
Among those he came to know this way were several Christian teachers held in prison, worn down by beatings and hunger, whose steady faith moved him deeply.
When the teachers were led out to be executed, Varus went with them and, before the judge, openly declared himself one of them. For this the judge had him beaten without mercy, and he died from the beating; the teachers who had inspired him were put to death soon after. Christians recovered his body, which had been cast outside the city, and a devout widow named Cleopatra took it into her own keeping, later building a church to house his relics, where the sick who came in faith found healing. Varus is remembered by the Church chiefly for the mercy he showed to others in their suffering before he was called to share in it himself.
