Tigrios and Eutropios

Holy Martyrs Tigrios and Eutropios (404)

Tigrios and Eutropios served in the clergy of Constantinople under John Chrysostom, Tigrios a gentle and kindly presbyter, Eutropios a young reader known for his purity of life. When Chrysostom was driven from his see and a fire broke out afterward in the cathedral and nearby buildings, the two were seized as his known partisans and accused of setting the blaze, though neither had any part in it.

The life of Tigrios and Eutropios

Eutropios was pressed under repeated scourging, his flesh torn and burned, to name those responsible, and would not, even as a young man of frail constitution; he died of his torments in prison, and it is said that as Christians carried his body away by night for burial, singing was heard from the sky above them. Tigrios endured his own severe torture and the dislocation of his limbs on the rack, and survived it, only to be exiled afterward to Mesopotamia for refusing communion with the bishop set over the church in Chrysostom's place. What became of him there in the end is not recorded, but the Church has always kept his memory among the martyrs, alongside his younger companion who did not survive.
