St Phanurius the Newly Appeared of Rhodes

Great-martyr Phanurius the Newly Appeared of Rhodes

Nothing certain is known of Phanourios, neither his country nor the years he lived. He is called the Newly Appeared because the Church learned of him only when his icon was found. On Rhodes, among the ruins of an old church, a number of icons were uncovered.

The life of St Phanurius the Newly Appeared of Rhodes

All were decayed but one, which looked as though it had been painted that day. The name written on it was Phanourios. Around the figure were twelve scenes, and in each of them he was suffering: stoned, racked, cut, brought before a judge, shut behind bars, burned, given to wild beasts, pressed under a stone. The scenes said what no record had preserved, that he was a martyr. The bishop of the island took the icon for testimony enough and asked the Patriarch to number him among the saints, and a church was raised to hold it.

Because he was himself lost for centuries and then found, he is asked for what is lost, and a cake is brought to the church on his day and blessed in his memory.
