St Tithoës of the Thebaid

Our Holy Father Tithoës of the Thebaid (4th c.)

Tithoes lived among the ascetics of Egypt remembered in the Sayings of the Desert Fathers, honored across the region as one of the elders of that first great age of desert monasticism. The record of his life beyond these sayings is thin, and no reliable account fixes the place or community where he spent his years.

The life of St Tithoës of the Thebaid

He left behind a few remembered sayings, the kind that circulated among the desert fathers as guidance for those who came after them. Asked once what path led to humility, he answered that it lay in abstinence, in prayer, and in the habit of holding oneself lower than everyone else, a teaching that matched the plainness of his own life. Those who knew him said that whenever he raised his hands in prayer his whole spirit seemed to leave the world behind. He reposed in peace, remembered less for any single event than for the steady, hidden discipline by which he had lived out his years among the Egyptian ascetics.
