St Mary, Wife of Cleopas

Holy Myrrh-bearer Mary, wife of Cleopas

Mary, wife of Cleopas, is remembered by the Church as having grown up alongside the Virgin Mary, sharing her house from girlhood. According to tradition she was the daughter of Joseph the Betrothed by an earlier marriage, and when Joseph returned from Egypt with the child Jesus and his mother, he gave this daughter in marriage to his own younger brother Cleopas.

The life of St Mary, Wife of Cleopas

Their son was Symeon, who would become the second bishop of the church in Jerusalem.

Scripture names her only once, standing near the cross of Jesus at his crucifixion alongside his mother and Mary Magdalene, and interpreters have long debated whether she is also the "Mary, mother of James" who appears among the women at the tomb on the morning of the Resurrection, and how exactly she was related to the Mother of God, whether by marriage or by blood. Whichever the case, the Church remembers her as one of the myrrh-bearing women, present at the Lord's suffering and burial, who went at dawn to anoint his body and were among the first to hear from an angel that he had risen. She is honored each year on the Sunday of the Myrrh-bearing Women.
