St Marcella of Rome

Marcella was born into a noble Roman family and widowed after less than a year of marriage. Refusing further offers, including one from a wealthy relative of the imperial family, she turned her home on Rome's Aventine Hill into a household of women devoted to prayer, fasting, and the study of Scripture, gathering companions who included Paula and her daughter Eustochium.

The life of St Marcella of Rome

When Jerome came to Rome in 382, he found in Marcella a formidable student of the Bible and of Hebrew, and after he left the city she continued to correspond with him on difficult questions of translation and doctrine. She took a leading part in exposing the errors then spreading through Rome under Origen's name, gathering evidence and pressing hesitant bishops to act.

In 410, when the Goths under Alaric sacked Rome, soldiers broke into her house believing she had hidden treasure; when she could produce none, having long since given her wealth away, they beat her. She bore it without complaint, pleading only that her young companion Principia be spared harm. She died a few weeks later of her injuries, in the company of those she had taught, saying she was glad to die as poor as she had always wished to be.
