St Hierotheus of Athens

Hieromartyr Hierotheus, Bishop of Athens

Hierotheus was a friend of Dionysius the Areopagite in Athens, and it was a little after Dionysius that he too received the faith from the Apostle Paul, who afterward set him over the church of that city as its bishop.

The life of St Hierotheus of Athens

When word came that the Mother of God was dying, he made his way to Jerusalem and stood among those gathered for her burial, and it was said that his singing there lifted the hearts of everyone who heard it, so inspired was he in that hour.

He spent himself after that in the work of his own see, bringing pagans to the faith and shepherding those already in it. What the Church remembers plainly is only this: that his life ended in martyrdom, and that for it he is given a double crown, one for the bishop's office he held and one for the death he died for it.
