St Euthalia

Holy Martyr Euthalia (257)

Euthalia lived in Sicily with her mother, who bore the same name, and her brother, all of them still pagan. Her mother had long suffered from a bleeding illness, and in a dream three holy martyrs appeared to her and told her she would be healed only if she came to believe in Christ and was baptized.

The life of St Euthalia

She did so and was made well, and seeing this wonder, her daughter Euthalia believed and was baptized as well.

Their brother mocked them for their new faith, then turned to threats. Their mother fled the house in fear, but Euthalia would not be moved, telling him plainly that she was a Christian and did not fear death. He sent a servant to violate her, but the man was struck blind the moment he touched her. Even this did not soften her brother's heart. He pursued his sister, seized her, and cut off her head with his own hand. The Church remembers Euthalia as a virgin martyr, given to death by the very one who should have protected her.
