St Arseny of Tver

St Arseny, Bishop of Tver

Arsenius took monastic tonsure early in his life at the Kiev Caves monastery, and rose there to serve as archdeacon under Metropolitan Cyprian, at times overseeing the affairs of the whole Kiev metropolitanate whenever Cyprian himself was away. In the late fourteenth century he was called from that setting to become bishop of a troubled Tver, where his prayerful, peace-seeking bearing did much to calm the city's affairs.

The life of St Arseny of Tver

He founded a monastery of his own on the river Tmaka near Tver, naming its first church for the Kiev fathers Anthony and Theodosius before later raising a stone cathedral of the Dormition there as well. Wanting his own monks to have the example of those earlier fathers always before them, he had a fresh copy of the Kiev Caves Patericon made from its oldest surviving manuscripts, a text still known as the Tver, or Arsenian, redaction, traditionally dated to 1406 and counted among the important witnesses to that early Russian literature.

Arsenius reposed on March 2, 1409, and was buried at the monastery he had built. His relics were found incorrupt in 1483, and a Church council formally numbered him among the saints in 1547.
