The life of St Eulalia of Barcelona
When the governor Dacian came to the city to carry out the persecution of Christians under Diocletian and Maximian, she left her parents' house at night and made her way into the city by morning, pressing through the crowd to confess Christ openly before him. For this she was seized and put to cruel tortures. She prayed that the Lord would receive her, and died calling on him; those present said a white dove rose from her lips toward heaven, and that a sudden snow covered her body where it had been left exposed. Her parents came grieving and rejoicing together to take her down. A companion named Felix, who had encouraged her, himself accepted martyrdom soon after and is remembered with her.
Whether Eulalia of Barcelona is the same girl venerated at Merida under a strikingly similar story, or two young martyrs whose memories grew alike over time, has long been disputed, and even her historical existence is not entirely certain.
