St Alexis Toth

St Alexis Toth, Confessor and Defender of Orthodoxy in America

A Carpatho-Russian priest of the Eastern rite, Fr. Alexis Toth was sent in 1889 to a parish of immigrants in Minneapolis. When the local Latin archbishop refused to receive him, he searched out the history of the division between his people and the Orthodox Church, and in 1891 he led himself and his flock home to Orthodoxy.

The life of St Alexis Toth

What began with one parish became a movement: over the years tens of thousands of Carpatho-Russian and Galician immigrants, and scores of parishes, returned with him to the faith of their fathers. He labored in poverty and weariness, and is honored as a confessor for it. He reposed in 1909 and was glorified by the Orthodox Church in America in 1994.
