The Uncondemning Monk

He is not remembered by name. He was a monk, and by the account kept of him a poor one: idle, careless, slack at his prayers. But in the whole of his life he never condemned another man. When he came to die the brethren found him joyful, and asked how a man with so much on his conscience could meet death that way.

The life of the Uncondemning Monk

He told them the angels had come with a sheet on which his sins were written out, and that he had answered them with the Lord's own word that those who do not judge are not judged; he had never judged anyone, he said, and he looked for the same mercy. And the angels tore the sheet across. The brethren were astonished at it. The Church has kept the story ever since without his name, for the sake of the one thing he did.
