St Savvas the New of Kalymnos

Born Basil in 1862 to poor, devout parents in Herakleitsa, on the Thracian coast, the boy who would become Savvas was the couple's only child. In 1887 he traveled to the Holy Land and entered the monastery of Saint George Hozeva, where he withdrew for years into the rugged cliffs above the monastery, reaching his cells by rope ladder and giving his days to prayer and to painting icons.

The life of St Savvas the New of Kalymnos

Accounts differ on how long this desert period lasted, and the exact span is not settled.

Ordained a priest in 1903, he later spent twelve years in stricter solitude at the Skete of Saint Anne on Mount Athos before a benefactor drew him, in 1925, to the island of Kalymnos. There he passed his last two decades as priest and spiritual father to the nuns of the Convent of All Saints, remembered as a confessor of unusual discernment, firm above all toward blasphemy, and gifted as an iconographer and wonderworker.

He reposed in the 1940s; his relics were uncovered in 1957, and the Church numbered him among the saints in 1992. He remains patron of Kalymnos.
