St Procopius of Decapolis

Our Holy Father Procopius of Decapolis (9th c.)

Procopius lived as a monk in the region called Decapolis, east of the Sea of Galilee, in the years when the emperor Leo the Isaurian moved against the veneration of icons. Procopius stood against the iconoclast teaching, holding that Orthodox Christians did not worship the painted image as such but honored in it the person it depicted, the reverence passing beyond the wood and paint to the one shown.

The life of St Procopius of Decapolis

For this he was seized by imperial order, scourged, beaten, and torn with iron claws before being thrown into a harsh prison. He remained there together with his fellow confessor Basil through years of suffering, both of them enduring rather than yielding, until the death of the emperor who had persecuted them brought their release. Freed at last, Procopius spent the remainder of his life in peace, guiding others toward a life of virtue and prayer, and reposed in old age, honored afterward as one who had suffered for the truth of the icons without shrinking from it.
