St Peter Yaropolk

Holy Prince and Passion-Bearer Peter Yaropolk (1086)

Yaropolk, called Peter in baptism, was a grandson of Yaroslav the Wise and great-grandson of Saint Vladimir, born into the turbulent politics of the Kievan princes. He shared the exile of his father, Grand Prince Izyaslav, driven from Kiev by his own brothers, and as a young man carried his father's appeals to the king of Poland, the German emperor, and the Bishop of Rome.

The life of St Peter Yaropolk

When his father was restored and later died, Yaropolk was given the city of Vladimir in Volhynia to govern, and there he had to defend his inheritance against kinsmen who wished to take it from him.

Traveling from Vladimir toward Zvenigorod, Yaropolk was struck down by his own retainer, a man who had been bribed to kill him by rival princes. His body was carried to Kiev and laid to rest in the church of Saint Peter, which he himself had begun building at the monastery of Saint Demetrius. He was remembered for his generosity, giving a portion of his wealth to the churches of the Mother of God, and the earliest chronicles of the Kievan Church already spoke of him as a prince pleasing to God, murdered by treachery rather than dying in battle or by his own fault, and so counted among the passion-bearers of the Russian land.
