St Nino of Georgia

Nino was born in Cappadocia around 296, and later tradition traced her family to the Great Martyr George and, through her mother, to a bishop named Juvenal connected with Jerusalem, though the exact generations behind that claim are not entirely settled and should be taken as inherited family memory rather than certain record.

The life of St Nino of Georgia

A vision came to her in which she received, from the Mother of God herself as the account is told, a cross woven of grapevine as protection against every enemy, seen and unseen; she woke to find the cross already in her own hands, and bound it fast with strands of her hair.

Once in Georgia, shepherds near Lake Paravani welcomed her and she was given leave to preach among the pagan people there. She went on to Mtskheta among pilgrims traveling to honor the idol Armazi, and tradition holds that a sudden storm of wind and hail broke the idol apart as they approached. King Mirian, unmoved at first by the change her preaching worked among his people, is remembered to have turned to Christ himself only after a hunting trip left him lost in a sudden darkness his old gods could not answer.

Through her long labor afterward Georgia became, and has remained, a Christian nation, a conversion historians generally accept even as the particular wonders around it remain the Church's own cherished tradition.
