St Matthias

Apostle Matthias (1st c.)

Matthias was numbered among the Seventy. After the Lord ascended, the eleven cast lots to fill the place Judas had left empty, and the lot fell on him, so that he was counted with the Twelve. When the Spirit came at Pentecost he preached in Jerusalem and through Judea with the rest of them.

The life of St Matthias

He went afterward with Peter and Andrew to Antioch in Syria, and passed through Tianum in Cappadocia and through Sinope. At Sinope he was shut up in prison, and Andrew came and set him free. He went on to Amasea by the sea, and was with Andrew at Edessa and at Sebaste through three years of travelling. The Church remembers that he carried the Gospel as far as the country the older writers call Pontine Ethiopia, and into Macedonia. He stood often in danger of his life and was spared it, until at the last he was put to death for the faith. His head was struck off afterward, so that the killing might be called the punishment of an enemy of Caesar. He is held to have died in the year sixty-three.
