Trophimus, Theophilus and Companions

Martyrs Trophimus, Theophilus and Companions

Trophimus, Theophilus, and thirteen companions suffered together in Lycia during the persecution of the emperor Diocletian, at the turn of the fourth century. Brought to trial for their faith, they refused every demand to sacrifice to idols and were subjected to severe tortures, among them stoning and the breaking of their limbs.

The life of Trophimus, Theophilus and Companions

Weakened nearly to death, they were then thrown into a fire, but according to the Church's account they emerged from the flames unharmed, which only strengthened their resolve and their witness before those who watched. Unable to break them by fire, their persecutors had them beheaded.

Little beyond this outline survives of the fifteen martyrs individually; the sources consulted preserve no other names beyond Trophimus and Theophilus, and the Church remembers them together as a single company of witnesses who suffered and confessed as one under the Diocletianic persecution.
