Hermolaus, Hermippus and Hermocrates

Holy Hieromartyrs Hermolaus (305), Hermippus, and Hermocrates at Nicomedia

Hermolaus, Hermippus, and Hermocrates were priests in Nicomedia who had survived a terrible massacre in the year 303, when the emperor Maximian had twenty thousand Christians burned alive together in their church. The three lived afterward in hiding, but did not stop teaching the faith to those who would listen.

The life of Hermolaus, Hermippus and Hermocrates

A young pagan named Pantoleon, who studied medicine in the city, used to pass the house where Hermolaus was concealed, and in time Hermolaus invited him in and spoke to him of Christ. Pantoleon returned again and again to hear him, and was in time baptized, taking the name Panteleimon.

When Panteleimon was later brought to trial for his faith and his healing of Christian prisoners, Hermolaus, Hermippus, and Hermocrates were arrested along with him. All three refused to renounce Christ and offer sacrifice to the pagan gods. During their trial an earthquake struck the city and shattered a nearby pagan temple, but this brought them no mercy from the enraged emperor, who condemned all three priests to death. They were beheaded together, faithful to the end, not long before their spiritual son Panteleimon followed them in his own martyrdom.
