The life of St Therapon of Cyprus
He came to Cyprus already known by name, and the governor of the island persuaded him to remain, giving him the see of Kition, where he served both as bishop and, the people said, as an unpaid physician to the sick of the whole island.
Sources differ on when and how his martyrdom came: some traditions place his death under the Roman persecution of Diocletian in the fourth century, while others describe him beheaded at his own altar centuries later during an Arab raid on Cyprus; both agree only that he died for his faith and was buried where he had first built his church. Long afterward, in the year 806, fearing further raids on the island, his relics were carried by sea to Constantinople, where sailors reported myrrh flowing from them and safety from a storm through his prayers; a neighborhood of the city still carries his name in memory.
