The life of St Tabitha of Joppa
When she fell ill and died, those widows sent word to the apostle Peter, who was nearby in Lydda; by the time he reached Joppa she had already been laid out for burial. Peter is recorded going to the room where she lay, sending the mourners out, and after prayer calling her by name, at which she opened her eyes and rose. The widows who gathered around her showed Peter the very garments she had made, evidence to him of the life she had spent in their service. Word of what had happened spread through Joppa and, Scripture says, led many there to believe. Tradition places the room of her raising in a house that can still be visited in the old port town, now part of Tel Aviv-Jaffa. She is remembered less for wonder than for the ordinary charity that made her death so mourned in the first place.
