St Sabbas II of Serbia

St Sabbas II, Archbishop of Serbia (1271)

Predislav, born around 1198, was the middle son of King Stefan the First-Crowned and his wife, the Byzantine princess Eudokia Angelina, and when he entered monastic life he took the name Sava in honor of his own uncle, the founding archbishop who had first carried that name into Serbian memory.

The life of St Sabbas II of Serbia

He served for a time as Bishop of Hum before rising, in 1263, to the archiepiscopal throne itself, taking up the office his uncle's own disciple, Arsenije, had held before him.

He governed the Serbian Church for eight years, until his death on February 8, 1271, after which Danilo succeeded him as archbishop. His own years in that seat left a lighter mark on later memory than the founding work of his famous uncle and namesake, but he stood nonetheless in the direct succession that carried the independent Serbian archbishopric forward, one more link between the office's beginning and the centuries that followed it.

He is remembered as the nephew who took up his uncle's name and, in his own quieter way, his uncle's calling as well.
