St Nonna, Mother of St Gregory the Theologian

Righteous Nonna (374), Mother of St Gregory the Theologian

Nonna was raised in the Christian faith by her parents. She married a wealthy landowner named Gregory, whose estates lay around Arianzus and Nazianzus, but who at the time of their marriage belonged to a mixed sect that honored a supreme god alongside certain Jewish customs and the veneration of fire.

The life of St Nonna, Mother of St Gregory the Theologian

Nonna worked patiently to bring her husband out of that religion and into the Christian faith she herself held, and in time he was baptized, going on eventually to become bishop of Nazianzus in his own right.

She raised the children born to them, among them the boy who would grow up to be remembered as Gregory the Theologian, in that same faith, and his mature writing carries throughout it the clear mark of the upbringing she gave him. She was remembered even in her own lifetime as a woman whose prayer carried unusual weight, and tradition credits her intercession with once saving her son from being lost in a storm at sea. In her later years she served the Church as a deaconess, and she reposed in the year 374.
