The life of St Clement of Ochrid
At Ohrid, from 886, Clement built a school of his own that over the years taught several thousand disciples and grew into what is remembered as the first center of higher learning conducted in a Slavic tongue, laying groundwork later generations would build entire literary traditions upon. Alongside his fellow disciple Naum, he also gave years to rendering Scripture out of Greek into Slavonic.
In 893 he became bishop, the first hierarch anywhere to preach, teach, and celebrate the liturgy in the Slavonic language, training clergy drawn directly from the Slavic people themselves so that the young Bulgarian Church would not need to depend indefinitely on Greek-speaking outsiders for its own worship and instruction.
He reposed on July 27, 916, remembered as the enlightener whose school gave the Slavic peoples their own voice within the Church rather than only a borrowed one.
