St Haralambos

Hieromartyr Haralambos

Haralambos was already old, past a hundred, when he served the church at Magnesia, some traditions calling him its bishop and Greek tradition remembering him instead as a priest there. Word of how many he was drawing people away from the old gods reached the governor of the province, and he was seized and brought before the authorities and would not offer sacrifice.

The life of St Haralambos

When they flayed the skin from his body he thanked his torturers for it, saying they were renewing him for a life that would not end. His endurance and the wonders that followed him converted many, among them the emperor's own daughter.

Condemned at last to be beheaded, he was led out to the place of execution and there lifted his hands and prayed, not for himself but for the health and salvation of everyone, and for a good harvest for the land. He finished the prayer and gave up his spirit to God before the sword ever touched him. The emperor's daughter took up his body herself and buried it with the honor due him.
