The life of St Gregory the Confessor of Alexandria
His flesh was torn with ox-hide and he was scourged, yet he said he was ready to lose every limb for the icon of his Christ. Sent into exile, he reposed three years later.

Elected by the bishops and people, he withstood the iconoclast emperor Leo the Armenian, and brought in chains to Constantinople he told the emperor to his face that he was a heretic and an enemy of the Church.
