St Eleazar

Righteous Eleazar, son of Aaron and second High Priest of Israel

Eleazar was born in Egypt, the third of four sons of Aaron and his wife Elisheba. When his two older brothers, Nadab and Abihu, died for offering unauthorized fire before the Lord, Eleazar rose to become his father's principal assistant among the priests, a position of real responsibility while Aaron himself still lived.

The life of St Eleazar

He married a daughter of Putiel and had a son, Phinehas, who would in time inherit his own office.

Near the close of the years Israel spent wandering before entering the promised land, Moses led Aaron and Eleazar up Mount Hor, and there, before Aaron's death, he removed the high priest's sacred garments from his father and placed them on Eleazar instead, marking him as successor. Eleazar took up the office of high priest that same day and held it for more than two decades afterward, assisting Moses in numbering the people of Israel, standing beside Joshua's installation as the nation's next leader, and helping to oversee how the conquered land was divided among the tribes once the conquest was complete. He was buried at last in the hill country of Ephraim, in a portion of land that had been given to his own son Phinehas, who succeeded him as high priest in turn.
