Cosmas the Protos of Mount Athos and his companions
St Cosmas the Protos of Mount Athos and his companions (ca. 1274)
Cosmas, the Protos (first among the abbots) of the Holy Mountain, with monks of Vatopedi, Iviron, Zographou, Xenophontos, and other houses, withstood the false union of Lyons pressed by the emperor Michael VIII and the Latin-minded patriarch John Bekkos. When imperial troops came to Athos to enforce the union, Cosmas was hanged and his companions beheaded, about 1280; his relics were uncovered in 1981 on the spot tradition had kept.
