Venerable Benedict Biscop, Abbot of Wearmouth (689-690)
Founder of the twin monasteries of Wearmouth and Jarrow, and the man who brought the learning of Rome to the north of England. A Northumbrian noble who left the king's service for the monastic life, he made repeated journeys to Rome and returned laden with books, relics, sacred pictures, and the Roman way of chant, even bringing the archchanter John to teach it.
