St Stephen of Vladimir

Our Holy Father Stephen, Abbot of the Kiev Caves and Bishop of Vladimir (1094)

Stephen took up the ascetic life at the Kiev Caves monastery under the guidance of Theodosius, and when Theodosius neared death he entrusted the leadership of the community to him. As abbot, Stephen carried forward the building of a great church in honor of the Dormition of the Theotokos that Theodosius had begun.

The life of St Stephen of Vladimir

In 1078 a hostile monk's scheming cost him his position, and he was driven from the monastery he had led; he bore the injustice without bitterness, continuing to pray for those responsible rather than seeking to answer them.

He went on to build a church at Klovo in honor of the placing of the Theotokos's robe at Blachernae, and in 1091 he was consecrated Bishop of Vladimir in Volhynia, where he labored for years to bring the Christian faith more fully to the people of that region. He took part, while bishop, in the solemn transfer of the relics of his own teacher Theodosius from the cave where he had been buried into the monastery church, closing a circle between the community that had formed him and the flock he had come to serve as its shepherd. Stephen reposed on the twenty-seventh of April, 1094.
