St Malachi

Prophet Malachi

Malachi lived around four hundred years before the birth of Christ, during the period when the Jewish exiles were making their way back from Babylon, and he is remembered as the last of the Old Testament prophets, called by later Church writers the seal of the prophets, since no comparable voice arose again until John the Forerunner some four centuries afterward.

The life of St Malachi

Almost nothing of substance survives of his personal history, and it is not even certain that Malachi was his given name rather than a title; the word itself means messenger, or angel, of the Lord, and later tradition suggests it may have been applied to him in honor of an unusually pure and upright life rather than passed down from his birth.

What remains of him is his short book of prophecy, in which he rebuked the people and priests of his day for their half-hearted worship and broken promises, while also looking ahead to what was still to come: the appearance of Christ, likened there to the rising sun of righteousness, and before him a messenger who would prepare the way, words the Church has long understood to point to John the Baptist. Beyond this brief but consequential testimony, no further record of his life has come down to us.
