The life of St Makary of Kalyazinsk
He entered the Nikolaev Klobukov monastery, and once he had gained his abbot's blessing, set out to find a solitary place of his own, settling eventually at a spot between two lakes some distance from Kashin, where he raised a cross to mark the site. A local landowner named Kolyaga gave him the land, and the monastery that grew there took his patron's name, becoming the Trinity monastery of Kalyazin, with Macarius installed as its igumen by the bishop of Tver. He reposed in 1483, and the Moscow Council of 1547 numbered him among the saints venerated throughout Russia, a distinction that in the following century drew rulers from Ivan the Terrible to Peter the Great to visit his relics.
