The life of St Hosea
His own book records a command he received from God to marry a woman named Gomer, whose unfaithfulness to him afterward gave his household a living shape to the very message he was sent to preach: that Israel, like an unfaithful wife, had turned from the God who loved her toward other gods. Rather than cast her off for good, Hosea took her back, and that reconciliation became itself a picture of God's own refusal to abandon a people who had given him every reason to.
He spent his ministry denouncing the idolatry that had taken hold in the northern kingdom and warning of the ruin that foreign invasion would bring upon it for that unfaithfulness. Yet his words looked further than judgment alone; he foretold one who would be called out of Egypt, who would rise on the third day, and who would overcome death, words the Church came to read as pointing toward Christ himself. What became of Hosea after his prophetic labors is not recorded, and he is remembered above all through the honesty of a book that turned his own difficult marriage into a lasting testimony of God's patience.
