St Eumenes of Gortyna

St Eumenes, Bishop of Gortyna

Eumenes gave away everything he owned to the poor while still a young man, choosing at the same time to discipline his body through strict fasting, well before the people of Gortyna in Crete asked him to become their bishop.

The life of St Eumenes of Gortyna

He held that see in the seventh century.

His years as bishop were remembered for the wonders worked through his prayers, among them a drought broken by rain called down through his intercession. He governed his flock, by every account, with unusual patience and tenderness alongside these gifts.

His final years turned to hardship rather than honor: for standing against the Monophysite heresy he was banished to the Thebaid in Egypt, and it was there, far from the people he had shepherded, that he died in the seventh century.
