Tone 1

The resurrection hymns of the Octoechos.

The Octoechos is the Church's system of eight tones of music, and the book of the hymns sung in each. St John of Damascus is credited with ordering the Church's music in this way. The Sunday hymns of the Resurrection change from week to week through the eight tones, in an eight-week cycle that begins again with tone 1 on Thomas Sunday, the Sunday after Pascha.

The hymns of tone 1

Resurrection apolytikion (troparion)
The stone having been sealed by the Pharisees and chief priests,
and Your all-immaculate body being guarded by soldiers,
You rose on the third day, O Lord and Savior, granting life unto the world.
Then the powers of the heavens cried out to You, O Giver of Life, and shouted,
“Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ!
Glory to Your eternal rule!
Glory to Your plan for saving us, only benevolent God!”
Resurrection kontakion
You rose from the tomb in glory as God, and You raised the world along with You. The human race extolled You as God, as death was obliterated, O Master. Now Adam dances, and Eve rejoices, freed from the bonds, and cries out, “O Christ, You have granted resurrection to all!”
Hypakoe
The robber’s repentance steals Paradise. The Myrrh-bearers’ mourning reveals the joy, for You had risen, O Christ our God, and granted to the world the great mercy.
