St Sisoes the Great

Venerable Sisoes the Great

Sisoes was Egyptian by birth and, seeking the ascetic life, first placed himself under the elder Or in the desert. After Or's death, wanting still to take up the same discipline Anthony the Great had kept, Sisoes went to Anthony's own mountain in the wilderness, arriving only after Anthony had already reposed, and settled there in the solitude his renowned predecessor had left behind.

The life of St Sisoes the Great

He remained there for some sixty years, becoming known across the desert for a wisdom that drew both monks and laypeople to seek him out, and tradition credits him with at least one act of raising a dead child back to life through his prayers, though he himself remained known above all for teaching humility before anything more dramatic. Severe with his own conduct, he was remembered as unfailingly gentle and welcoming toward everyone who came to him, never turning away a visitor regardless of what they had come seeking. When he lay dying, those gathered around him saw his face grow bright, and Sisoes, questioned about what he saw, said only that Anthony himself had come, together with the prophets and the apostles, to receive him. He reposed around the year 429, having spent the whole of a long life on the mountain of a teacher he had never met in this world, and whom he nonetheless followed so closely that Anthony himself came to receive him at the last.
