The Eve of Theophany

January 5, strict

The Eve of Theophany (January 5) is kept as a strict fast, in preparation to receive the Great Blessing of Water on the feast. It descends from the ancient preparation of the catechumens who were baptized at Theophany. If the eve falls on a Saturday or Sunday, wine and oil are permitted and the strict fast is kept on the preceding Friday instead. Coordinate your fasting and your reception of the holy water with your parish priest.

The measure is yours to receive, ask your priest.
